Transportation

By taxi

There are hotels that provide a price list for cabs. Fare charges can range from about 50 pesos for short trips to 200 for longer trips. Some hotels have an airport to hotel transport service but this can be quite expensive so it’s advsable to take a taxi instead. Travel agencies are also likely to provide customers with information about transportation to and from the airport. Be cautioned that cab drivers have schedules to adhere to so expect for fast speeds.

You can negotiate for reasonable trip costs outside of Puerto Vallarta on slow days since most taxi drivers are friendly. You can ask them to wait for you while you dine or shop or take photographs along the trip. A reasonable fare is definitely worth an additional tip to the taxi driver.

By bus

Prepare 5.5 pesos which is about 40 US cents (0.30 Euro), for every bus fare. You can tour the whole city as long as you don’t get off the bus and you stay on it while it travels along the city. Bus stops are at every five to ten blocks and buses can get full during peak hours. For courtesy, a man usually offers his seat to a lady if the bus becomes crowded.Don’t bring large bills as bus drivers are not keen on breaking them, They will make change though.

Getting to places like Pitillal and Ixtapa is easier by bus. Buses are also useful when travelling from the hotel zone and marina area to the downtown or old-town areas. Buses marked Centro pass through the hotel zone and the old town, and those marked Tunel skips downtown and heads straight to the old-town / zona romantica through the tunnel bypass.

With 12 pesos or $.85 fare, you can visit Bucerias, while 20 pesos or $1.50 fare is all it takes to go to Punta Mita. Mismaloya bus fare costs around 6 pesos. If you plan to go to Guadalajara, you can take larger buses and spend five hours on the road to your destination. There are Mismaloya buses along Basilio Badillo on the corner just west of where you can see them lined up.

Buses to Bucerias, Punta Mita or points in between leave from the northernmost bus shelters in front of Wal-Mart/Sams, past the main road. Though you have to catch a city bus to Wal-Mart/Sams, this is the easiest way to go to Bucerias and destinations near it.
